In addition to being a good friend, Walter achieved life-long distinction for those of us who in ninth grade at Daniels were in Mrs. Fletcher's after-lunch Latin class.  On November 22nd, Walter, after a trip to the bathroom, came back and announced to the class,  "Have you heard that the President has been shot?"

For all these years when anyone asks where I was when President Kennedy was assassinated, I (and I am sure the others in that class) say, "I was in Latin class in ninth grade when Walter Wright walked in and asked, "Have you heard that..."

1962 North Hills Football Team

I was sorry to hear of the passing of Walter Wright, aka "Walter Lee", as those of us knew him at Josephus Daniels Jr. High School. I first met Walter Lee when I attended Daniels, and although I don't remember any specific classes we shared together, we were both on the same 1962 North Hills football team one year. I was the left halfback and Walter Lee was one our receivers. I really had fun the year I played and was glad I got to get to know Walter better and share some special football moments. When I got to Needham Broughton, I kind of lost track of him until I saw him again at one of our NBHS reunions, maybe the 20 year reunion? I walked over to him and we had a very nice conversation, getting caught up on our careers, and reminiscing about our football days together, all those years ago while at Daniels. I found hm very warm and engaging, and he mentioned his eye surgery practice in Kinston, NC, as well as some of his other interests and hobbies. It was great seeing him again, and only wish our paths had crossed more often when we attended Needham Broughton. His was a very full, life well lived, as evidenced by his obituary. May he rest in peace.

Thanks to John Lumsden for sharing the picture of our 1962 North Hills Football Team. "Walter Lee" Wright is in the middle on the next to the last row. I'm on the front row on the right between Paxton Badham and Todd Turner, former Athletic Director at NC State University. John Lumsden, also on the front row, is on Paxton's right side.
