Johnny lived in Beckana (on Ridge Road) and one could basically say that we grew up together. Boy Scouts, Church functions, classmates, the whole 9 yards. He and his brother Charles and sister Vera Ellen were like family to us. I was surprised to learn one day that he had gotten secretly married before graduating high school, probably the earliest marriage of any of us. Later, I learned that he had followed his father into the tire and tire repair business; I ran into him at the 30th NBHS Class Reunion in Raleigh and he looked well and prosperous.

During his years at Frances Lacey, LeRoy Martin, and NBHS, Johnny was an all-rounder who participated in sport, music, and academic activities. He totally loved a good party and the fellowship it brought. He was also a member of the various social clubs at NBHS, indicating that he had broad popularity.

Sorry to hear of this news, prayers for his family...

My most vivid memory of good ol' Johnny is that he was a very happy guy, outgoing and readily engaged with his classmates, a true ray of sunshine!
