Upon graduation from Broughton and a brief stint at Hardbarger Business College I continued with The Sands until June of 1970. The band, having changed to a "Soul, R & B format in the spring of 1967 traveled throughout the southeast performing at such landmarks as "The Pavilion" at Myrtle Beach, The Cat's Eye in Raleigh, at times backing up such beach music legends as The Showmen and Clifford Curry. The band consisted of between five and nine musicians. Being booked out of Charlotte N.C by Hit Attractions the band traveled on an old Greyhound bus and performed on nearly every major college campus between Charlottesville Virginia and Atlanta Georgia. The last performance of The Sands was in Spartanburg S.C. in June of 1970. In March of 1971 I went to work with the North Carolina Highway Patrol where I worked for the next thirty years retiring as Raleigh Communications Supervisor. Along the way, my wife Brenda and I obtained our North Carolina Broker License and formed Whitehouse Realty Inc. I retired in January 2001. Our time now is divided between our home of fifty years in Apex, N.C, our home on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Fancy Gap Virginia and our home on Topsail Island in the town of Topsail Beach. Recently I have made contact with several people from the past both from Broughton and The Sands and this has meant a lot to me. As for the music, I can be found "live and in person" most evenings in my music room playing along with the oldies. That's all y'all !!

School Story:

Playing in "The Sands" with Chuck Spain, Larry Butterton, Steve Gay and Tom Jones was the highlight of my school experience. During my five years as drummer with this band I learned many valuable lessons that would allow me to succeed and prosper throughout my life.

Johnny Carter was the type of guy you always wanted in your band.   Great player, easy disposition and rock solid dependability. I tried to recruit him into the Sands on at least two occasions. When I heard the news I was shocked.
