Retired from the political arena in 2020. Moved to be closer to grandchildren in 2021. Now living in Fuquay-Varina.
Starting NC READS, Inc. A NC Charitable Corporation. 40% of our children are not learning to read. NC READS intends to change that. All children do learn…and reading is the most important like skill.

School Story:

Music, music, music. Our 50th reunion was really a great event...an opportunity to reflect on how classmates, faculty and the culture at Broughton affected me. Believe it or not, I was kinda shy, not very athletic, not an academic standout. I did OK academically because it was expected by the school culture and my parents. What I enjoyed most was music... including symphonic band, marching band (and trips), orchestra, chorus and ensemble. When was they time for anything else?

Well, several of us found time to start an offshoot of "Up With People" and "sing Out America", a movement promoting Americanism and racial (and political) inclusion. The local group was called "Sing Out Tarheels" and there were about 60 members from several Wake high schools. We sang songs "What color is God's skin" and "Which way America?" I was one of the musical directors. One day while the group was performing on the steps in front of the state capitol building, in the middle of a performance, a man crossed in front of the group and handed me a business card. After the performance I looked at the card. It read "You are being watched by the Knights of the Klu Klux Klan." OMG! What does a 17 year old white kid do with that? And that's an interesting story involving the SBI. Needless to say, I'm still here!

Thanks Broughton for a quality education and for feeding my gifts and talents.

Sewell and I were in cub scouts together - probably a Webeloes den.  We met at his house on Washington Street off Glenwood Avenue.  His house was right next to the train tracks.  As I remember it was a huge yard and they had chickens roaming around.  A very special place for 10 year olds to play.

Later in life we ran into each other at political events.  I believe he lived out in the Marsh Creek area near Wendell during that time.

It was good to see him at our last reunion.  I think I can say with confidence that Sewell as a man of conviction who lived his beliefs.  Rest in peace my friend.

Felix was always the fastest kid in our after-school football games down between Wayland Dr and Cambridge way up on the hill.

I didn't see you at the 50th! Would love to catch up!

Happy Birthday!

Yesterday was Buzzy's birthday.  How would have been 69.

Buzzy was my childhood best friend - all through Sherwood Bates and Daniels.  We were inseparable.  We even produced a neighborhood event called the B & B Circus complete with bike tricks, dog tricks and I'm not sure what else.  I don't remember whether anyone other than our parents came.  It really didn't matter.

Not having anything else to do one summer day, Buzzy and I got out our snow sleds and slid down this steep (but short) pine straw covered hill (off Banbury Rd) and tumbled into a dry creek bed.  It was fast and no one got hurt or cold!  Summer fun!

Buzzy was the last of his immediate family - his younger brother and both parents passed before he did.  The last time I saw him was down at Morehead City as he was leaving Captain Bill's Restaurant one evening.

Watching the sunrise on Bogue Sound yesterday morning, Buzzy came to mind.  A good friend and good memories.  You left us too soon!
